Cleveland State at Kansas State

Here are a few from the game between Cleveland State and Kansas State at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kan. on Tuesday night, December 29, 2009. The 12th-ranked Wildcats won the physical match-up, 85-56.

Great crowd on hand for this game and word has it they oversold tickets. Wow, if that's what we get for a non-conference game over Christmas break (re: students home for the holidays!), the Big 12 portion of the season is gonna be a wild ride. Will be anxious to see how deep the 'Cats go this season.

Thanks for looking.

Arkansas Pine-Bluff vs Kansas State

Had the chance to get over to Manhattan, Kan. on Monday, December 21, to shoot a men's basketball game between the Arkansas Pine-Bluff Golden Lions and the 12th-ranked Kansas State Wildcats. Pretty decent crowd considering it's Christmas break. The Cats didn't look in top form, but they pulled out a 90-76 win.

Texans vs Rams

The Houston Texans faced the St. Louis Rams on Sunday, December 20, 2009 in St. Louis, Mo. Results for the Rams were pretty much the same as they've been all season as they lost, 16-13. Here are a few images from the game.

Incredible!

Check out this story, pics and video. Not much to say about this other than what's in the title of this post.

Incredible.

Seahawks vs Rams

Shot the Seahawks at the Rams game on Sunday, November 29, 2009 in St. Louis, Mo. The highlight of this particular game was that Sean was able to shoot the game, also. What a great opportunity for a high school sophomore. He did a great job and you can see some of his images at his web site.

We had the chance to meet up with former K-Stater and 10-year NFL vet Damion McIntosh after the game. What a super nice guy. But he's a K-Stater, so what else would we expect, right? :)

Here are a few images from the game, along with a shot of Sean and Damion taken with my iPhone.

Missouri vs Kansas - Border Showdown at Arrowhead

Finally getting around to posting some of the photos from the November 28, 2009 match-up between Big 12 rivals Missouri and Kansas at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. Pretty decent football game, especially for someone like me who didn't care who won. Missouri won, 41-39, on a last second field goal.

Best part about this game was the chance to shoot along side Sean. He's shot two seasons of Big 12 football, but this was his first visit to Arrowhead (or any NFL stadium). Can't beat getting to do these kinds of things with your kids.

Thanks for looking!

Missouri at Kansas State

A little slow at getting these images posted, but here are a few from the last K-State home game of the 2009 season.

Sunflower Showdown #107

The 107th Sunflower Showdown between Kansas and Kansas State took place Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kan. What a superb November day it was...temperature in the mid 70s, a close football game, awesome perfomance by the KSU Pride of Wildcat Land Marching Band, and a 17-10 Wildcat victory!

Yea, there are a few more images in this post than normal, but there was something a little "extra" about this game from a photographer who is a proud K-State journalism grad and whose daughter is in the marching band!

Here are a few shots from the game. Thanks for looking.

KSU Pride of Wildcat Land Marching Band

Here is something a little different than just the regular photo galleries. This is some video of the KSU Pride of Wildcat Land Marching Band performing outside Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kan. before the 107th Sunflower Showdown between Kansas and Kansas State on Saturday, November 7, 2009.

The band rocks and as a former trombone player it was especially fun to be up close with the 'bones. And, yes, I'm a proud band parent (and think the saxaphones sound great, too!)

Enjoy!

Colts vs Rams

Spent most of another fall Sunday in St. Louis to shoot the Colts vs Rams at the Edward Jones Dome. Colts pretty much had their way with the Rams and the game was never in doubt.

I enjoyed the chance to visit with former K-State lineman Ryan Lilja after the game. It's been fun to watch his career since he was at K-State.

Here are a few images from the game. Yep, there are a bunch of Peyton Manning; I will make no apologies for that. :)

Colorado at Kansas State

Here are a few images from K-State's 20-6 win over Colorado on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kan. Finally had a day game to shoot. Clouds were in/out all day, but the weather was really nice. Had a great day and was actually able to grab some good food in the 'Ville after the game.

Texas A&M at Kansas State

Those who know me have heard me say on more than one occasion there's no reason to play non-conference games on the road and no reason to play difficult non-conference games because the Big 12 schedule is brutal enough.

Take the last two weeks for K-State fans as a case in point. October 10 the Cats go to Lubbock and get whacked by Texas Tech, 68-14. It was 38-0 at the half. Fast forward one week and K-State is back home to face Texas A&M, a team with the nation's fourth ranked offense. Halftime score, K-State 38-0, A&M zero. Final score, 62-14. Go figure.

It was a stinky 6 p.m. kick-off, which means lighting was terrible for most for the game. I wouldn't necessarily care about the 6 p.m. kick-off as a fan, but for a photographer it's far from ideal. But we gotta work with it anyway. It was also Harley Day, which is always fun, but I'm kicking myself for the photos I got from that. Not good. Worst part about it is I have to wait a year to try again. Oh well, at least it wasn't a wedding!

Vikings vs Rams

It's been a couple of years since I've shot NFL and I was glad to be back on Sunday, October 11 in St. Louis. What a way to get back into it...getting to shoot future hall-of-famer Brett Favre. Yep, I came home with a lot of images of Brett Favre. Hey, it's Brett Favre. Even if I wasn't a football fan, as a photographer I'd have been a fool to not get lots of pics of him. The Vikings looked pretty darn good as they moved to 5-0 on the season with a 38-10 win.

For the photogs who are curious about this stuff...these were all shot with Canon MarkIIn and MarkII bodies and a 400/f2.8, 70-200/f2.8 and 20-35/f2.8 lenses. I've got a couple of Big 12 games between now and the next time I head to St. Louis, but I'm looking forward to shooting another future hall-of-famer (Peyton Manning).

Thanks for checking out the photos.

Kansas State vs Iowa State

Farmageddon v1 took place Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium when Kansas State played Iowa State in the first of a two-game series to be played there between the two schools. K-State came out on top, 24-23, when they blocked a PAT by Iowa State that would... have tied the game with less than a minute left to go in the game.

If you like these photos, head on over to the Scott Sewell Photography Facebook page and become a fan! Thanks for looking.

Tennessee Tech vs Kansas State

Kansas State finally looked like they were getting something going on offense when they hosted Tennessee Tech at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kan. on Saturday, September 26, 2009. K-State won, 49-7. Wide receiver/kick returner Brandon Banks had two touchdown returns for TDs, which was the first time that had been done in one game by a Big 12 team.

Duke visits Kansas...in football.

Here are a few images from the Duke at Kansas football game on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kan. Don't remember the score, but KU won rather easily.

Funny thing about this game was I thought it was a 6 p.m. kick off as many of the non-conference games are. I'm sitting around drinking a Saturday morning coffee when I read Ann Williamson's facebook status at 10:45 a.m. that said she was at Memorial Stadium ready to shoot KU football (Ann is a shooter for the Topeka Capital-Journal. I thought, "wow, she's at the game awful early." Then I thought I'd better check kickoff time and that's when I saw it was an 11 a.m. game! Fortunately, it's a short drive to Lawrence and I was on the sideline with 12 mins left in the second quarter. Thought I actually had a pretty good game, all things considered.

Some WaRu Marching Band

It's always great to get to see, hear and shoot the Washburn Rural High School Marching Band. Of course, having our second child imersed in the band program and Lynette and me being co-presidents of the Band Parent Council keeps our interest high. Here are a few images from their first two performances.

More "One-lens" High School Football

I've been shooting high school football so far with only one lens on a Canon Mk2n body...the Sigma 120-300/f2.8. I toss the lens and body into a backpack and jump on the motorcycle toward the high school down the road about three minutes. This is a great football lens and I've been very pleased with how it performs.

UMass at Kansas State

Here are a few images from the UMass vs K-State football game on September 5, 2009. This was the first K-State football game of the 2009 season. K-State won the game, 21-17.

The first image is my favorite from the day...Hollyann performing in the KSU Pride of Wildcat Marching Band, debuting their new uniforms.

Football 2009 - Let's get this rolling.

Here are a few high school photos from the first few weeks of the 2009 football season. All of these images were shot with the Sigma 120-300/f2.8 lens on a Canon Mk2n body.

Athletics at Royals - MLB

Here are just a few images from the Athletics vs Royals baseball game on August 8 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. You know how sometimes you have those days where things just feel "off" and other days where things feel "on"? This was one of those "off" days.

Have a very full weekend and didn't even make an attempt to get credentials for the AMA Tornado Nationals (Superbikes) here in Topeka this weekend. But I did have a couple of hours late Friday to get out and shoot the last few riders of the day (sure helps to live close to the track!).

These were either shot with a Canon 400/f2.8 or a Sigma 120-300/f2.8.

Shawnee Heights 2006 Basketball Highlights - Video 1

Just something fun from a few years ago that I thought I'd toss up for some variety. This was a fun little project.

Here is a quick video I put together of some behind-the-scenes footage of a MLB stadium. Nothing fancy, but maybe someone will enjoy seeing a little of what it's like.

2009 NHRA Summer Nationals - Sunday

Sunday was championship day at the 2009 NHRA O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka. The racing was better than on Saturday, but I only spent one round at the starting line. The rest of the time I shot from the grandstand and at the "top end" (better known as the end of the track!). Most of what one can get from the top end is jube and driver reactions to winning or losing. Problem is, when it gets to the pro drivers, every track goober and sponsor who thinks they have to shake hands with a pro is standing around getting in the shot. Makes a for a tricky situationg trying to find a good position to shoot from.

Thanks for looking.

2009 NHRA Summer Nationals - Saturday

Here are just a few more from day two. Not quite feeling on top of my shooting game this weekend, so I'll have to try to step it up a few notches for the finals on Sunday.

Thanks for looking.

2009 NHRA Summer Nationals - Friday

My favorite day of the weekend of the NHRA Summer Nationals here at Hearland Park Topeka is Friday. The top fuel and funny cars run a couple of times and the second time they run is in the evening. This weekend, they started probably an hour later than normal so the sun had long gone away.

Here are a few from the evening. I'm headed back out today (and Sunday!) and will update again with a few other images. Thanks for stopping by.

Youth sports...the same rules apply!

Sometimes I am asked by new sports shooters how to get access into MLB or NFL games. They seem to have the perception that that's where the best shots are. Granted, the action and skill at the professional is unmatched, but good photos can be found even with the little guys.

And the same basic principles apply...faces and some kind of action (preferably, with a ball in the image) are key. Of course, when shooting for sales to parents it's always good to get a few "stock"-type images. But one way to separate yourself from the next guy who just bought his first DSLR and lens is to capture peak action.

Hopefully this gives you someting to think about next time you head to the ballpark. Good luck and happy shooting!

Pelican 1514 Case - A Quick Look

I just picked up this case (used) last week and will be using it for a specific project this weekend. It's packed with the gear I will need for this shoot, but I can tell this is going to be a very useful and versatile case.

Tx Tech vs Kansas State Baseball

Got out to shoot a little college baseball yesterday in Manhattan. Texas Tech vs Kansas State. The Wildcats certainly didn't look like a Top 10 team as they lost 12-6. Heck, it was 12-2 in the eighth inning. Not a good time of the year to be losing games.

For the photographers in the crowd, these were all shot with a Mk2n and a 400/f2.8. Not one of my better outings, but we all have days like that. Thanks for looking.
